GSG grade scale

Our grades are built around consistency, subgrades, and visible card condition.

Granite State Grading uses AI-assisted image analysis to evaluate the same core areas on every card: centering, corners, edges, and surface. The final grade appears on the front label, while subgrades provide a clearer look at how the card earned that grade.

Our goal is simple: make the grade easier to understand. A buyer should be able to see the overall grade, review the subgrades, and verify the certification record behind the slab.

Centering

Centering measures how well the printed design is positioned within the card borders. A card with strong centering has balanced left/right and top/bottom borders. Off-center cards lose grade strength as the imbalance becomes more noticeable.

Corners

Corners are reviewed for sharpness, rounding, dings, fraying, bends, whitening, and visible wear. Sharp, clean corners support higher grades, while even small corner flaws can affect the final result.

Edges

Edges are reviewed for chipping, rough cuts, whitening, nicks, dents, and uneven wear. Clean edges help a card hold a high grade, especially on darker-bordered cards where defects are easier to see.

Surface

Surface review looks for scratches, print marks, stains, gloss issues, dents, creases, scuffs, residue, and other visible flaws. Surface issues can be subtle, but they often separate strong cards from truly elite examples.

Grade names

GSG numerical grades and label descriptions.

GSG uses a numerical grade with a short label description. The number is the primary grade. The text helps describe the condition tier at a glance.

10

PRISTINE

Reserved for a card that receives a 10 in every subgrade category: centering, corners, edges, and surface. This designation separates a fully perfect 10 from a card that reaches an overall 10 without perfect subgrades across the board.

  • All four subgrades are 10.
  • Exceptional eye appeal.
  • No meaningful visible defects detected in the reviewed categories.
10

MINT

An elite card with an overall grade of 10, but not all four subgrades are perfect 10s. This card may have one very minor limiting factor while still grading at the top overall level.

  • Overall grade is 10.
  • One or more subgrades may be below 10.
  • Still represents an outstanding high-end example.
9.5

GEM MINT

A premium card with excellent presentation and only very minor imperfections. A Gem Mint card should look exceptional at normal viewing distance, with small issues only becoming apparent through closer review.

  • Strong centering and clean overall appearance.
  • Very minor corner, edge, or surface limitations may be present.
  • High-end collector appeal.
9

NM-MINT

A sharp near-mint to mint card with strong eye appeal. A 9 may show minor imperfections in one or more categories, but the card remains clean and attractive overall.

  • Minor wear or imperfections may be visible under review.
  • Centering may be slightly less balanced than higher grades.
  • Still a strong, high-grade example.
8.5

NM-MT+

A strong near-mint to mint card with more noticeable limitations than a 9. The card still presents very well, but one or more subgrade areas may show modest issues.

  • Good visual appeal with light flaws.
  • May show slight corner, edge, surface, or centering weakness.
  • Above a standard NM-MT example.
8

NM-MT

A near-mint to mint card with visible but limited condition issues. An 8 should still present well, but defects are more apparent than in the higher grade tiers.

  • Visible minor wear may be present.
  • Centering may be noticeably imperfect.
  • Surface, edge, or corner flaws may be easier to detect.
7

NEAR MINT

A solid card with good presentation, but with clear condition issues that keep it below the near-mint to mint tier.

  • Noticeable corner, edge, surface, or centering issues may be present.
  • Still visually collectible and appealing.
  • Condition flaws are no longer limited to close inspection.
6

EX-MT

An excellent to mint card with visible wear or defects. The card may still display well, but condition issues are readily apparent.

  • Moderate corner or edge wear may be present.
  • Surface flaws may be visible.
  • Centering may be clearly off.
5

EXCELLENT

A card with obvious condition issues but acceptable overall presentation. Wear, surface flaws, or centering problems are clearly visible.

  • Visible wear is expected.
  • Edges and corners may show meaningful softness or whitening.
  • Surface defects may affect eye appeal.
4

VG-EX

A very good to excellent card with significant condition issues. The card remains collectible, but wear and defects are prominent.

  • Rounded corners, edge wear, or surface issues may be significant.
  • Centering may be poor.
  • Eye appeal is meaningfully reduced.
3

VERY GOOD

A card with heavy wear or defects, but still intact and identifiable. This grade reflects clear condition problems across one or more categories.

  • Heavy corner, edge, or surface wear may be present.
  • Creasing, staining, or other flaws may affect the card.
  • Collector value is driven more by scarcity, subject, or demand than condition.
2

GOOD

A heavily worn card with major flaws. The card is still collectible but has substantial condition issues.

  • Major wear, creasing, staining, or surface issues may be present.
  • Edges and corners may be heavily worn.
  • Overall eye appeal is limited.
1

POOR

A card with severe condition problems. This grade is used for cards with extensive wear, damage, or defects while still being identifiable.

  • Severe wear or damage.
  • Major creases, paper loss, staining, or structural issues may be present.
  • The card remains identifiable but condition is heavily compromised.
How subgrades help

The number tells you the grade. The subgrades help explain it.

Two cards can share the same overall grade for different reasons. One card may have excellent centering but weaker corners. Another may have sharp corners but a surface issue. Subgrades help make those differences visible.

More transparency Subgrades show which areas supported or limited the final grade.
Better buying decisions Buyers can decide which condition factors matter most to them.
Clearer resale presentation Detailed grading information and slab images make listings easier to evaluate.
